Type | Te HangaVideoDescription | Whakamārama“Tauranga Moana” is a popular local waiata (song), written by Bob and Lorraine Rawiri in the 1970’s. The waiata was written for the purpose of encouraging rangatahi Māori (young adults) to uphold the treasures of our tupuna (ancestors), and be proud of where they come from.
Bob & Lorraine Rawiri were both the head tutors and leaders in the original kapa haka group known as Te Aranga. The kapa travelled throughout Aotearoa, and the world in the 70s, sharing our Māori culture through kapa haka. There is much debate around some of the kupu (words), as it has adapted and evolved over time, however, Te Aranga still maintain the original way to sing this waiata.
