Description | WhakamāramaThe area where the people of Te Rangihouhiri settled after leaving Whāngārā area. According to Ngāi Tai people, Ngāti Te Rangihouhiri settled in Hakurānui for a short time, digging kōpiha, or small rua moe (sleeping holes) to rest and rebuild their strength for the journey ahead. The kōpiha are still visible at Hakurānui today, and thanks to Ngāi Tai kaumātua such as the late Wiremu Bill Mixwell, Ngāi Te Rangi Iwi today still maintain a strong connection to Hakurānui.
