Description | WhakamāramaTe Rangihouhiri is the eponymous ancestor of Ngāi Te Rangi Iwi. He is the eldest son to Romainohorangi, leading his people on the long journey from Whāngārā, after many years of serving Te Waho o Te Rangi and his people of Ngāti Rangohokaia, seeking refuge at Hakurānui, and eventually to Whakapau Kōrero. It was here where Te Rangihouhiri uttered his final prophecy after hearing that his eldest son, Tutengaehe, was killed at the battle of Herekakī. "Haere rā e tama, mōu tai ahiahi, mōku tai awatea" Farewell my son, go in the evening tide and I shall follow in the morning tide. Te Rangihouhiri was killed the next day at the battle of Poporohuamea in Maketū.Collection | KohikohingaTe Heke o Te Rangihouhiri
